Creative Soundtrack for Period Film soundtracks: Dario Marianelli

By Cesar Arevalo | Audio Specialist.

Classical music has always been a crucial part of movie soundtracks, since the early history of cinema and theatre, all the orchestral possibilities have been available for complimenting any script. We are used to the idea that this music must be performed by strictly following the indications of the composer’s manuscript and this is, indeed, the first approach that filmmakers adopt when bringing back to life classical pieces for their movies. However, there are a couple of film music composers and arrangers that have taken classical music pieces to a new level, applying their own rules to achieve a more creative and fresh outcome. Complementing audio-visual productions more assertively, serving as the script’s advocate by contributing to the creative process with a wider perspective.

The goal of this post is to highlight the remarkable collaboration between the British movie director Joe Wright and the Italian composer Dario Marianelli, one of the greatest film music creators for period films today. The different methods applied to adapt classical music pieces to a 21st-century cinema context are discussed on a video essay at the bottom of this post, in this short video, several examples of these arranging and composition techniques can be appreciated. All these samples have been extracted directly from some of the greatest films developed by this outstanding combination of talents.

This particular way of approaching the adaptation of a classical music piece to a period movie or any other type of picture brings a new wide range of possibilities when it comes to writing music for films, one of the reasons why Marianelli’s work is considered as inspiring and innovative.
